Hair Tutorial: Big Side Loose Braid for Graduation

This style is absolutely gorgeous. My hair is not long enough for this style, BUT I am definitely going to attempt it and pin up the ends.

MARCH MADNESS: DAY 9

Once again I didn't do anything at all. Tonight, I deep conditioned and let the hair airdry. I will decide what to do when tomorrow comes. Until then, goodnight my luvs

MARCH MADNESS: DAY 8

I lounged around the house all day. I worked in the AM. Still tired from the night out, I just woke up, washed up, and left. Did not do anything to my hair. This is the result. Don't laugh. This is my look for this weekend.

MARCH MADNESS: DAY 7

Celebrating my friend's 25th birthday tonight so I wore flat twists over night. I oiled my scalp, applied Olive Oil lotion, and Curls unleashed to my hair, then twisted.  Unraveling however, I always have an issue with. I don't know what I am doing incorrectly but it did not work out for me. Everyone at work loved it. (See picture below) Since I did not agree with the way it was, I decided to pin it up for the night to go out. It came out sort of like the pictures below.  For the weekend, I plan on deep conditoning and trying a roller-set. I hope it turns out nice and bouncy like the others on youtube

CURRENT LENGTH CHECK

If you check the previous post on March 6th , you noticed that I did chop from below BSL to now full APL again. I just thought I would give a good length check picture to measure my growth for the month of March.

MARCH MADNESS: DAY 6

I haven't been wrapping my hair all week so far, so I woke up with wild hair, and wondering what style I could "shock" my co-workers with today. I chose to keep the same format for this week which has been the typical "princess side braid (as I call it).  This time I did the back different. I pulled it all up into a top banana clip sort of bun. Very easy to do, and it looks great.

BIG CHOP

Or something like it. As you know, I did suffer from heat damage due to not using heat protectant. I don't know why I had stopped using it, but I did and my hair suffered in the process. I was left with no choice but to cut once I noticed the ends on my right side of the hair were very rough. I mean ROUGH to the point no matter how much oil or butter I put on it, it was soaked right up. The damn piece wouldn't even curl with the curling iron. However, it would curl naturally with water. WEIRD. So now I chopped off most of my right side and it looks like I have layers. I gave myself a trim in the process. I'm actually loving the look. I cut the hair off about two weeks ago now, and everything seems to be headed back on track. Stay tuned for more progress shots. (Images below are from last week after the chop. Looks good right?) And the back looks like this: I'm no longer BSL, but I know I will make it there before the end of summe...

QUICK AND EASY STYLES BY KIM KIMBLE

Of course browsing on youtube today for hairstyles to try during my "no heat challenge," I came across this video directed by Kim Kimble. In this video, she demonstrates a few styles to do on curly hair. It can be naturally curly, curly from curling irons, flexi rods, old bantu knot outs, braid outs or whatever, it can even be done on blow out hair. The point is, just about anyone can try these quick and simple styles. Give it a try and make sure I see a picture. Email me. I would love to see your creative approach to it.

MARCH MADNESS: DAY 5

Basically, I went off of the style I did yesterday. Braid in the front, but this time, a banana clip in the back. I oiled my scalp because it was itchy, but other than that, I did nothing at all.

MARCH MADNESS: DAY 4

On "old" hair, I created this beautiful style out of my head. Of course I was bored, so I just wanted something different. I didn't want to wear my hair out, so I opted for a bun. Now considering my features, a bun alone would not fit my face, so I decided to dress it up with "something" in the front. That "something" happened to be a loose braid down the side.   How To Do: The night before, I placed my hair into two buns. Half up, and half down. This is to create a wavy upon take-down in the morning. After take-down, I separated a good portion of the front. I pinned it down until I was complete with the back. In the back, for the bun, you gently use a wide-tooth comb so you do not make the waves created from the buns frizzy. You come to one side of your head. I used the left side to place the bun on. You wrap a scrunchie around twice and leave a few strands out to make it look like a neat "messy" bun.  Now the back is complete. ...

MARCH MADNESS: DAY 3

I didn't do anything at all to my hair until bedtime. Still with the flat iron job from over a week ago, I finally oiled my scalp with a mix a created, I put oil on my strands and separated my hair into a top half and a bottom half. I then put them into two large buns. I'm going to keep it in over night and return with the results tomorrow evening. Last time I did this, it came out with a very wavy, curly look. (Images below) So to recap what I did for my night routine: Separated hair into two sections. A top half and a bottom half Starting with the bottom half, I begin to oil my scalp with a mixture I created After oiling the bottom half, I then use Shea Butter to moisturize my strands, starting with the ends.  I brush softly, then put into a big bantu knot. Repeat the same thing for the top half Let it sit in hair for a few hours Complete

MARCH MADNESS: DAY 2

Again, I did absolutely nothing at all to my hair. Lol I have just been hair lazy. I wore a bun all day. No pics to show because I slept most of the day away. However, I know you all love pictures as much as I do, so I will show you a style that I am really in love with. It's making me want to cut my bangs to fit this style into my "styles to go to" list.

MARCH MADNESS: DAY 1

Today I was busy. I drove from NY to Pa, then back to NY all withing 12 hours. Busy life. When I got back to Brooklyn, I had to rush right in to work at 5pm. Hectic day. Therefore, I didn't do much to my hair. I told my coworker I was not going to straighten my hair for the whole month of March. Which is why I am naming this month "March Madness." The last time that I used the flat iron was February 23, 2014.   So my hairstyle for today straight still. Nothing in it at all. I haven't oiled my scalp or anything all week. Follow my picture journey as I blog EVERY DAY this month. Let's see how much success I have with no heat, tender care, and protective styling.

SIMPLE BUN WITH AN ACCENT

A style that I found quick and easy to get me through one of those "unsure" days was a bun with a front swoop (which I call an accent). I applied some hair lotion, a little bit of jam for the edges, and a little bit of olive oil to the ends throughout my hair. Section off a portion in the front to make the "accent." It's up to you how much of an accent you want to swoop over. Until you are ready to mess with it, pin it down so you can focus on creating your bun. The the bun in the back, the more bushier your hair, the bigger your bun will be. My hair is naturally bushy when it is air dried. I have thick hair. What I did was wet it a little bit to make it easier to stay in place once I started bobby-pinning it down. I took the hair into both hands and started twisting in one twist all the way down to the ends loosely. Upon reaching the end of the twist, lightly roll up the hair and then pin down to the scalp. The sides should be very loose at this point a...

UPDATES...

So far this year I have not used any heat in my hair. I'm debating on straightening it tonight for a length check since I trimmed exactly a month ago. There are a few things I have done since my last post. I dyed my hair to a more reddish tint. As stated, I trimmed to a more even length. I cut out heat for a month. Lastly, I upped my deep conditioning treatments. There are also  a few styles I found that work without using heat at all. They gave me beautiful curls (will post about that in the following post). I also noticed that my natural curs are coming back and more beautiful. I love how versatile natural hair is. Stay tuned. I'm back. I find that when I was posting daily hair styles that I was posting more frequently. I may do that again for another 60 days.

I LOVE DOING FLAT TWIST OUTS

Okay, don't kill me. I know in the last post I said I was just going to wear a bun for tomorrow, but now I have decided to do a flat twist out. That way I wont have to worry about my hair for the rest of the week. I will of course post pictures tomorrow but for now, goodnight. ETA: I changed my mind again. What is wrong with me? Okay, I'm going back to my original post, as in where I will just wear a bun. I will do the twist out tomorrow night. Sigh.
