Harmoni- Natural Adventures

Meet Harmoni, a natural from Brooklyn. Having the pleasure of knowing Harmoni personally, I had to interview her about her journey to being natural after seeing an uploaded picture of her gorgeous coils.  I recently noticed that your hair is progressing and growing in beautifully, how long have you been natural now? I have been natural for about two years I believe... Was there something that influenced your decision to make that change? Or someone? I just got tired of perming my hair....so I looked for another solution. Which I started out with locks and I cut out all the perm. What do you enjoy most about your hair? How do people perceive your hair since I noticed you wear it out in your natural texture? People pay a lot more attention to my hair and I receive tons of compliments daily. With that gorgeous mane of yours, I know you have to have a daily regimen or routine. Do you mind sharing with that is, I mean I would love for my curls to fall in a similar fashion?  My ro

Wash-N-Go Easy and Quick

I got tired of the flat hair, so I decided to co-wash and wear curly. These styles are so quick and easy that I should not even have an excuse for a bad hair day.  TODAY'S WASH-N-GO Well, long story short, it got rained on after looking so cute and all the curls dropped to this Luckily with my wash-n-go's I can do "touch-n-go" styles like so... My new favorite style to do is something I call "mariposa" meaning butterfly. I love doing this quick lil' bun-like thingy.  Successful wash-n-go: wash with only conditioner, moisture enriched Do not put a towel over your head to dry, instead put on a shower cap or scarf around hair. Wait for 5 minutes to let the water be soaked up in the scarf, or if using shower cap, let water drip off into cap and slowly remove. Use a leave-in conditioner and run through hair Begin to scrunch hair but not to rough There ya go,

No-Heat Quick Hairstyle

As a natural, one of the things I can not seem to get a hold of yet is a silky wrap with NO HEAT involved. Oh my, once I get that down, I am good to go as far as getting rid of the heat. Anyway, I came close with something similar.  This style was done with no heat. I washed, conditioned and oil my scalp and ends, wrapped the hair overnight with a scarf and let it be. The next day, my wrap came out sooooo nice and soft and also straight. I had also put in a few rollers for the twirly curls. I loved this effortless hairstyle.  Give it a try.

How I Safely Flat Iron My Hair

Well, I document almost EVERY thing I do to my hair. This obsession has got me really going crazy. I mean, this is the healthiest, strongest and longest my hair has ever been in my adult years. I often get asked how do I flat iron my hair, how often, and how long does it normally stay straight? How Often Do I Flat Iron: Well, I flat iron my hair once bi-weekly. I make sure that I use heat protectant and spray sheen before I use the heat. So far, no harm has been done to my hair. Heat does not have to be the devil if you are taking proper precautions to ensure the health of your hair. I never blow-dry and flat iron anymore, I stopped that 2 years ago. I only air-dry. How Long Does It Last: My hair usually stays straight for a week or a little longer as long as moisture does not hit it. Remember I'm a natural so my hair will curl/shrink/and bush up all at the same time at the drop of water. How Do I Flat Iron: (this is what works FOR ME) On clean, air-dried hair, I pa

Himba Women - A Tribe of Natural Beauty

Known to be the true beauty of the world, Africans have always created a style of which has been unique. Recently I ran across a webpage about life in Africa and seen some of the most creative and beautiful woman I have ever seen.  Himba Tribe is a tribe located in Namibia, which is apart of Southern Africa. Natural beauty at it's finest. The women usually cover their-self with a mixture called otijize which is of butter fat and ochre. It is said that it is to protect themselves from the sun. What the otijize does is give their skin a reddish tint, which symbolizes Earth's rich red color and the blood that symbolizes life, this is consistent with the Himba ideal of beauty. If you notice, the women have something in their hair. Unique enough, the women braid each other's hair with plastic hair and then cover it in their ochre mixture.  Beautiful. Love and embrace our ancestry. Look how beautiful their skin is...

MY FIRST HAIR CRUSH!

As a child, I had "normal" length hair, a little below shoulder length and somewhere around APL. I remember drooling over different celebrities hair. But my first few hair crushes included Ananda Lewis from MTV, Tatyana Ali who played Ashley on the Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Chilli from TLC, Kellie Williams (Laura on Family Matters), I forgot this girl's real name but she played Lisa Turtle on Saved by the Bell, Maia Campbell from the show In the House, singer Mya, and of course Aaliayah's luscious mane of hair.  Oh yea and Journee Smollett, who played in that movie Eve's Bayou. I used to dream about their hair when I slept. Now that I am older, I see all they did was take proper care of their locks. I am just waiting for the day when I achieve this look. Yes this is her natural hair Kenya Moore

Understanding Hair Types

It is a known fact that our hair is different from other races. No matter how many times people say “it’s just hair,” fact still remains that our hair is unique. We can do many things with our hair that most have a difficult time doing, for example, achieving an afro or keeping styles in longer; we are able to manipulate our hair to do as we please. Hair Types Type 1 Hair:  Straight hair that hangs loose and free Usually it's sleek and shiny Not easy to hold a curl Hair easily become oily but is hard to damage this type of hair.
